Features and Benefits

Creating Portable Document Format (PDF) files from disparate sources has become a high priority recently due to the increased demand for sharing, delivery, presentation and security of documents and data.

A number of solutions have been proposed including;

- Postscript interpreters which require large installations, postscript printer drivers, port redirection and suffers from limitations such as no concurrent usage, no server side processing, no scheduled agent support, no formatting and no security control.

- XML / XSL / DXL transformations which require java servlets, temporary documents, special agents, custom formatting commands and suffers from limitations such as password security issues, must create XSLT file, must create rich-text fields, needs knowledge of XML / XSL and build XML / XSL formatting content for each and every document that is output as PDF, comprehensive INI file and server document modifications.

- Custom printer drivers which require special driver installations and suffers from limitations such as output quality dependent on application print quality, support for all application design elements, limited server side processing, limited scheduled agent support, no formatting control and no security control.

Database systems (such as Notes and Domino, SQL Server, Oracle etc.) are outstanding as a data storage medium but as we can see from the variety of methods provided above it is not as easy to get that data out in a formatted manner.

DominoPDF takes an innovative approach in leveraging a feature that database systems provide exceptionally well; converting data to HyperText Markup Language (HTML).

For example, the Domino HTTP task seamlessly converts Notes data to HTML and supports all Notes design elements whilst enforcing security, maintaining formatting and retaining a medium that notes developers understand.

DominoPDF accepts all HTML output no matter where it originates.

All that is required is the DominoPDF software and an active HTTP task which can be connected to.

DominoPDF is provided as a single Dynamic Linked Library (DLL) and exports a number of functions which can be called from scripting environments.

At its most straightforward the script simply needs to pass a URL for the data to be converted and an output path for the PDF file which will be generated.

DominoPDF will then convert the HTML generated to PDF and save it to disk.

Additional functions are provided to control PDF settings such as page size, orientation, encryption, compression, display modes, metadata etc.

DominoPDF also provides functions for merging existing PDF files into one single PDF.

You're not limited to converting HTML from the local server either as DominoPDF simply processes HTML data provided by a URL.

If your server has Intranet or Internet access you can reference external URL's in addition to localhost access. For example, you could reference graphic files on your Intranet or headlines from an Internet news site etc.

As DominoPDF processes all HTML, CSS, images etc. you can also be confident that all design elements are supported.
